What is Fallen Empire: Legions?

An FPS game currently in development by GarageGames.  Not just any ordinary FPS game, Legions will have jetpacks, allowing players more flexible movement by being able to fly!  As said in one of their promotional videos: freedom of movement returns.

It's also a a web game of sorts, being powered by InstantAction.

Is this a Tribes sequel?

Certainly not!

Various news posts have described Legions as a spiritual successor to the Tribes series.  It isn't a clone and it isn't aiming to be a sequel or anything too close to Tribes.  GarageGames does not hold the copyright to the Tribes franchise and declined the development of a Tribes successor quite a few years ago.

But it does have jetpacks?

Yes.  You'll be seeing both jetpacks and skiing in Legions, something which it will have common with Tribes - however it will act differently.

One key feature is that you'll be able to jetpack in six directions.  You won't be able to jetpack at the same speed in all directions but it certainly adds far more flexibility into the gameplay.

What sort of web game?

Legions isn't a typical web game when you compare it to all the other Flash and Java games you may have seen elsewhere.  InstantAction is mostly a platform for launching regular games through the web browser, although they can appear in the browser window you still get the full advantage of a powerful DirectX game.

You could compare InstantAction to Steam, both have community features and have the ability to launch the games you want.

Can I play in full screen?

Yes, this is being planned.  It isn't just a little web game in a browser window!

What are the system requirements?

Operating system: Windows XP or Vista.

Browser: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7.

Graphics: Shader model 2.0 minimum.

No other requirements have been stated apart from the graphics card.  GarageGames are aiming for Legions to run on a wide variety of computers, so we might see some fancy effects which degrade gracefully.

The requirements may change during development.

When will beta be available?

Soon, beta is expected to start at the end of March 2008.

GarageGames are aiming to have an initial playable game known as the core 1.0 release.  This will have the basic weapons along with a few maps.  It'll still be a long way from being complete though.

They'll be picking a variety of beta testers from people giving feedback on the InstantAction beta.  It'll initially start off with a small group but will expand as they need more testers.  So if you want a chance of testing then sign up to InstantAction and start submitting bugs!

When will the game be released?

No specific date has been confirmed, however beta is expected to start at the end of March 2008 and it could take a few months to finish.

What engine does the game use?

A customised version of the Torque Juggernaut engine.  Juggernaut is a modified version of the Torque Game Engine.

How customisable will it be?

The developers are aiming for it to be customisable with different skins and maps, although this certainly won't be one of part of the core 1.0 release.  Part of the problem is making it a simple process when taking the InstantAction platform into consideration.

Hopefully we'll be seeing the ability to create custom mods and maps, but we'll have to wait for confirmation.

What weapons are there?

Current weapons being implemented are:

  • Rocket launcher
  • Grenade launcher
  • Chaingun
  • Laser rifle

More weapons are likely to appear after the core 1.0 release.

There is no spinfusor or disc launcher, however a rocket launcher could be considered a fairly close alternative to it.

What sort of maps and gameplay?

The initial aims are to have maps designed for around 16 players.  Ideally there is going to be enough action going on throughout an entire game, so don't expect massive maps for small games.  No large buildings and no vast open spaces.

Various features such as vehicles and deployables are unlikely to be included for the time being.  They're not adding features for the sake of it, but working on the gameplay to make it as fun as possible.

How much will it cost?

No pricing information has been released yet.  InstantAction is aiming for an inexpensive gaming experience so it could be fairly cheap.
